If you’re spending your valuable time and money on personal training sessions, you deserve to get the results you are looking for!

Your success depends on you and your trainer working together, each putting in 100% every session.

Here are 10 proven tips to help you get the most from your trainer, training sessions, and hard earned money.

  1. Limit the chitchat. A little back and forth conversation is important to building rapport and keeps things from becoming stale however, constant small talk can derail your efforts and theirs.  Especially when you’re both distracted from the task at hand.

  2. Show up on time. Every minute of a session missed takes away from the time you scheduled for fitness and can also totally throw off your trainer’s workout plan. Get even more for your money by showing up early and warm-up prior to your workout, if your trainer and you agree it is safe to do so.

  3. Respect the stopwatch. There’s a reason your trainer is specifying 30 or 60 second breaks between sets and asking you to hold the intensity of cardio intervals for a specific duration. Adhere to their suggested timing, and you’ll see far better results, faster.

  4. Clean up your eating. No amount of working out can hide the evidence of a poor diet.

  5. Be truthful. Your trainer will have a hard time managing your program and results if you claim to be exercising more or eating healthier than you really are. Be honest about what you’re doing when not with them and accept that your trainer needs to be honest about the results you can expect, based on the effort you are putting in to each session and the rest of each day.

  6. Be positive about your ability to succeed. Many trainers have a natural aversion to the phrase “I can’t do that.” If you are hurt or sore, tell them!  Your trainer will adjust your workout accordingly, that is what they are trained to do!  Be open to trying new things, even if it's hard at first there is a reason behind each and every exercise.

  7. Trust your trainer. It is 100% ok to ask questions about why you’re doing certain exercises, but in the end, you either trust your trainer’s expertise or you don’t.  If you do not trust your trainers advice for concrete reasons, you may need to make a change of trainer.  Every person, and trainer, has a personality and a good fit for both is key to super charging success!

  8. Get your sleep. Your fitness recovery and progress hinge on adequate sleep. Your available energy for workouts also is directly correlated with how much restful sleep you get each night. Showing up to training sessions exhausted dramatically limits the potential of your sessions.

  9. Be open. Personal trainers are very intuitive, but they’re not mind readers. Be sure to share with them how your body feels, what boosts your motivation and what makes it wain.  Trainers need to know how your are feeling not only in reference to your body but your mind as well.  Your feedback is vital to your success.

  10. Jump in with two feet. If you are really dedicated to get healthier and become more fit, bring that attitude to your training sessions.  Enthusiasm motivates trainers to go above and beyond to see you reach your goals and be successful.

All of these tips are simple and easy to follow.  Using them will help you get to where you want to be!
