Exercising when Expecting

In most cases, exercise is safe during pregnancy, often it is even recommended. Typically, the first rule of thumb is if you were physically active before you were pregnant, it is ok to remain active during pregnancy.

Your healthcare provider likely will tell you to remain active, as long as it is comfortable for you and there are no other health concerns that call for limited physical activity.

Your pregnancy is not the time to exercise for weight loss, however, proper exercise during pregnancy may help with weight loss after the delivery of your baby.

You should consult with your health care provider before starting any new exercise routine.

Some benefits from exercise during pregnancy you may experience …
  • Reduction in frequency of backaches, constipation, bloating, and swelling
  • May help prevent, or treat, gestational diabetes
  • Increased energy
  • Improved mood
  • Improved posture
  • Positive gains in muscle tone, strength, and endurance
  • Improved and more satisfying sleep

Regular activity also helps keep you fit during pregnancy and may improve your ability to cope with labor and can make it easier for you to get back in shape after your baby is born!

Always consult your healthcare provider, if they give you the green light to stay physically active … get out there!  Listen to your body, any level of activity can be beneficial to your overall health, mind and body!
